Teaching - My Way

My education as a second language teacher and a translator, as well as my  studies towards M.Ed. degree, constitute the formal qualifications relevant to my teaching Hebrew. However, what I feel is most important revolves around the application of what I have learnt through a proactive interaction with my students.

I use a wide range of existing textbooks and teaching materials regularly updated during visits to Israel. At the same time I continue to create my own programs, customized study materials and learning resources to complement textbooks and enhance students learning. (A Hebrew word processor allows me to prepare much of the material, texts and charts and if needed complete with vowels).

Pictures, stories, articles, songs and films from all media help me vary the material offered in the various courses.

Classes are specifically tailored toward groups or individuals. To date various courses have been created, most important of them:

bullet 3 levels of immersion Mini Ulpaneem   courses
bullet Introduction to Biblical Hebrew the Practical Way
bullet The Hebrew elements of the Shivim-Panim Curriculum of The Florence Melton Adult Mini School

My experience as a mother raising  my Vancouver born son and daughter (now university students) to be fluent Hebrew speakers and readers has given me a unique perspective. I have learnt much from their process of language acquisition, as I tried to expose them as naturally as possible to Hebrew and its culture. This experience has proven to be very valuable for the instruction of other children, youth and adults students as well.

My continuing work in Translations further provides me with  insights for the teaching of languages. Hebrew has characteristics or 'behaviour' very different from English. Studying it involves more than memorising vocabulary and grammar rules. While moving from one language to another, and vice versa, we experience gains and losses. Being aware of the above is important for both teacher and students,  it encourages students' openness and thus ease their way into the Hebrew 'mind'.

My approach is pragmatic rather than academic. The means used and emphasised in the various courses are carefully weighed by considering the particular course objectives. For that reason a solid grammatical foundation is always provided but only as long as it serves the students to better understand and apply what they learn.

Finally, it is my strong feeling that teaching Hebrew is not only providing students with skills but also with the keys with which they can open a window into the Hebrew, Jewish and Israeli culture. My teaching and the material used in my classes hopefully reflect that attitude.
