Gain understanding of the rudiments of biblical Hebrew grammar and vocabulary. Learn most frequent biblical vocabulary, patterns of Hebrew word and sentence formation, verb patterns and 'tenses'. On completing the course the student should be able to read and understand simple biblical Hebrew prose with the help of a lexicon.

The course is currently taught at the  University of British Columbia - Department of Classical, Near Eastern, Religious Studies

 

Format at the GVJCC:

Level 1: 30 weekly sessions, September to May, 2.5 hours each (covering the basic vocabulary and grammar as well as the Qal Prefix and Suffix forms in most common root groups).

Level 2: 15 weekly sessions term, September to December/January,  2.5 hours each (covering the Qal Infinitives, Imperative and Participle forms, as well as 4 more verb stems in most common root groups)

Prerequisites:

Familiarity with the Hebrew letters, vowels and the ability to read comfortably a simple text.

You can achieve that by taking the   Aleph 1 Hebrew Reading course at the JCC  

or on learn to read on your own with the help of 

- Teach Yourself to Read Hebrew - Simon, EKS Publishing

or equivalent.
